Glacial Settlers

 

When the glaciers melted in the last Ice Age, about 10,000 years ago, the granite boulders they were carrying along settled down to the earth beneath, and have remained unmoved for 10 millennia.  Here, on a polished dome overlooking Tuolumne Meadows, a pair of these "glacial erratics", as they are called,  look out over the meadows.  The one on the right is several thousands of pounds, and over 4 feet tall.
