Fire Sentinels

The Salmon Creek fire in a summer of the early 1970s devastated many thousands of acres of the southern coast of Big Sur, along many miles of coastal Highway 1.

The following winter, approaching storm clouds move in over the fog that covers the ocean, and the rains they will bring will begin the process of rebirth.  These stark sentinels, blackened but unbowed, will soon have offspring rising to join them, for many of their their seeds survived beneath the ashes.
